they/them

I'm a therapist and social worker living and working in the Hudson Valley, NY. I work primarily with queer and trans folks, many of whom navigate chronic illness, grief, and complex trauma histories. I am passionate about working with survivors of sexual and domestic violence, and am particularly interested in working with folks who have been historically and systematically denied access to survivor centered resources and healing spaces. I am also committed to supporting trans and non-binary folks in navigating systemic barriers to gender-affirming medical care, and appreciate serving as a resource for families of trans youth in advocating for and supporting their children. I draw most heavily from my training in relational psychoanalytic theory and Somatic Experiencing.

I value somatics as a central part of my work- not only for its attention to the body and nervous system, but for the ways in which anti oppressive somatic work necessitates an appreciation for the essentiality of consent, agency, self-determination, and moving at a pace that is antithetical to the urgency of capitalism. Somatics has offered me, both personally and professionally, a vehicle for gentleness and a container for holding complexity and contradiction.

I'm also interested in transformative justice (TJ), and imagining / practicing ways of integrating anti-carceral principles into my work. Part of what this means to me is a continual reckoning with the ways in which social work / therapy are fields built on / designed to perpetuate white supremacy and other systems of violence. My commitment to TJ also manifests as a deep belief in the power of rupture and repair, and moving through conflict, as generative processes that support both individual and collective transformation and healing.

If you are interested in learning more about my practice, setting up an initial consultation, or inquiring about non-clinical services (i.e. workshop facilitation), please feel free to email me at emma@emmanevel.com.
