Meet Abbie

Abigail (Abbie) Ruth, LCSW (NY)

She/her

I am a white, queer, cisgender woman and licensed clinical social worker based in New York City. I have been an LCSW since 2007 and have worked in a variety of clinical settings, including mental health and healthcare, before moving more fully into private practice. I began my career in documentary film and publishing before deciding to pursue social work. I wanted my work to be more closely aligned with my values and my desire to help people. I’ve always been curious about people and their stories, and that curiosity continues to shape the way I practice.

I currently work virtually with LGBTQIA+ adults navigating anxiety, relationship patterns, identity, and longstanding ways of coping that may no longer feel sustainable. Life is messy, and sometimes the ways we’ve learned to cope no longer work as well as they once did. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, self-aware, and accustomed to taking care of others, but may struggle with self-silencing, people-pleasing, over-functioning, perfectionism, or feeling responsible for others’ emotions. My work is collaborative, relational, and affirming. I consider the whole person—including the impact of identity, family, culture, community, marginalization, inequity, and systems of oppression—and how these contexts shape experiences of safety and belonging. I help clients explore the patterns that show up in their lives, develop greater self-understanding, and create more possibilities for how they want to live and relate.
